Sears Retirees Deliver the Good Life Via Extreme Makeover
|
Sears
retiree volunteers, recruited by Helen Hanson (front
row, second from right in photo below), president of
Sears Retired Executives Club of Southern California,
were part of the Sears American Dream Team featured on
the March 28 edition of ABC's new hit series Extreme
Makeover: Home Edition. Sears is proud to be the
exclusive retailer of the series which airs Sunday
evenings at 8 p.m. EST (7 p.m. CST).
The new hit TV show provides a deserving family with a
week-long vacation while their home is completely
remodeled. Sears products, such as Kenmore
appliances used in the renovated kitchens and the
Craftsman tools used by the makeover crew, are embedded
into the show as part of the story line. In addition,
Sears commercials air during the broadcast. The
show is intended to position Sears as part of the good
life, a provider of merchandise and brands for every
room in the house.
The home of Sweet Alice Harris was featured in the
March 28 show. Sweet Alice Harris was named the
Lieutenant Governor’s California Woman of the Year in
2002 for her endless efforts over the last 35 years to
clean up the Watts neighborhood of South Central Los
Angeles, needed some help of her own after a freakish
storm (known as a supercell) dumped massive amounts of
rain and flooded her home, as well as her entire
community last year.
When the home of Sweet Alice Harris and her family
suffered water damage, they lost their furniture and
carpet, and for two months have had to live out of one
bedroom. Unfortunately, insurance did not cover the
damage to the Harris home, nor to the neighbors’
houses which were also damaged in the flood. The
beleaguered-looking block was in need of a sweet
miracle, and one was delivered in the form of Extreme
Makeover: Home Edition.

series on the setof the March 28 show.
Among the numerous contributions from Extreme Makeover:
Home Edition -- 120 Sears American Dream Team members
(made up of associate and retiree volunteers) helped
residents surrounding the Harris home who were affected
by the storm with free appliance repair, Sears Gift
Cards and new mattresses with bedding. The program is
part of the Sears American Dream Campaign's $100 million
commitment to strengthen families, homes and
communities. Each house and yard (40 families) on the
entire block received its own mini-makeover in the form
of new landscaping, paint touch-ups and the installation
of new wrought-iron fences. To complete the job, more
than 80 gallons of paint were used and 75 trees and 15
pallets of shrubs and flowers were planted. In total,
Sears donated more than $65,000 in merchandise and gift
cards to residents on the block.
