Sears Holdings Extends Kmart Discount to Sears Retirees

Eligible Sears retirees will now be able to enjoy discounts at Kmart. Sears Holdings has finalized a new, expanded merchandise discount program that provides cross-discounts at Sears and Kmart for eligible active and retired associates.

The expanded associate-retiree discount program follows an in-depth analysis of the Sears and Kmart discount programs and current tax regulations that dictate employee discount eligibility. As part of the review, focus groups were held with both active and retired associates to better understand what aspects of the discount are valued benefits.

The cross-discounts at Kmart and Sears stores will become effective with the Family & Friends Anniversary Celebrations taking place at Sears on Sunday, March 12 and Kmart on Sunday, March 26 (March 25 in select stores, see below). Sears retirees are being sent invitations to both events.

Eligible Sears retirees will now enjoy a 20 percent discount on regular and clearance priced apparel and 10 percent on other regular and clearance priced merchandise at over 1,400 Kmart and Kmart Super Center retail outlets in 49 states, Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands.

The discount will not apply to Kmart advertised merchandise, including “Buy One, Get One” events (you will pay the lesser of the advertised price or the discounted regular price). Other exceptions also apply (see below).

The discount for eligible active and retired Sears associates will be extended to purchases made on kmart.com at a later date. When the kmart.com discount becomes effective, most likely in May, it will be announced via this Web site.

The current Sears and Lands’ End discount programs will continue for eligible active and retired associates with one change: purchases made using promotional coupons will no longer be eligible for the discount. Purchases made using reward certificates, such as Sears Premier and KidVantage rewards, or Family & Friends discount shopping passes will continue to be eligible for the discount.

Q. Can you clarify the policy regarding the use of coupons?
A. Price reduction coupons cannot be used in conjunction with the associate-retiree discount. If you receive a flyer or promotional materials with a price reduction coupon you must determine at the time of purchase whether to use a promotional coupon or your retiree discount. Additionally, “future purchase” coupons generated at point-of-sale cannot be used in conjunction with the discount.

The only exception to this policy will be made on purchases using reward certificates, such as Sears Premier and KidVantage. In those cases, you can receive both your retiree discount and the reward certificate reduction.

On Family & Friends special events, you can continue to receive both the Family & Friends discount and the retiree discount.

Q. Is the discount allowed when a price is reduced in accordance with Sears price matching policy?
A. No. The retiree discount is not allowed on top of price matches. Retirees are eligible for the lesser of the price match or the discounted selling price.

Q. Can I get a 10% discount on groceries when I shop at a Kmart SuperCenter?
A. There is no associate-retiree discount on most grocery items. The discount is generally allowed on grocery items that are identical to those carried in Kmart stores.

Do all Sears retirees get the Kmart discount?
All Sears retirees who retired before April 1, 2003 will be eligible for the Kmart discount. Sears retirees who retired after April 1, 2003 from Sears Corporate, Product Repair Services, CCN, SLS, SHIP, sears.com, or from the Sears Full-line, Sears Essentials or Sears Grand organizations will also be eligible for the Kmart discount.

Do Kmart retirees get a discount at Sears?
Yes, as part of the expanded new program, eligible Kmart retirees now receive a retiree discount at Sears.
How can I ensure I receive the Kmart discount?
The point-of-sale system will verify that you are a valid Sears retiree. To receive the discount, simply present your Sears retiree discount identification card at point-of-sale, and pay for your purchase with cash, check, Kmart gift card, PIN debit card, Sears credit card or other in-house credit card. All Kmart stores now accept the Sears credit card.

When can I start using the Kmart discount?
The discount at Kmart stores will launch with the Kmart Family & Friends Anniversary Celebration event that commemorates the one-year anniversary of the merger of Sears and Kmart. This event will take place on either Saturday, March 25 (for stores in Utah, Idaho, Puerto Rico, and the following New Jersey stores: Westwood, Lodi, Elmwood Park, Paramus and Closter) or Sunday, March 26 (in all other Kmart stores).

The discount on kmart.com purchases will take effect later this spring and will be announced on the Sears Retiree Website (www.retireessears.com).

Are there any changes to the current Sears or Lands’ End discount programs?
The new Sears Holdings discount program no longer allows promotional coupons to be used in conjunction with the associate-retiree discount. However, you will still be able to get your discount on purchases made using rewards certificates, such as Sears Premier and KidVantage rewards, or Family & Friends discount shopping passes.
